New Jersey, USA - An earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude shook the Caribbean nation shortly before 5:00 PM yesterday. More than 28 aftershocks have so far been recorded. Scores are trapped in the ruble and many are presumed dead. Approximately 3 million people are affected. Haiti is still in the recovery phase after 3 successive hurricanes hit the country a year ago.

The Haitian League is saddened by the sudden earthquake and loss of life and devastation resulting in the aftermath. We present our condolences to those affected. Unfortunately Haiti lacks a strong disaster management program -- and scarce resources -- and so speed is of the essence.

“The problem is not only the unkindness of Mother Nature but the abject poverty, the unabated deforestation, the forced urbanization added to the non-enforcement of building codes.”, said Dr Bernier Lauredan, President of The Haitian League. “Now is the time for a concerted effort to rebuild the country with a coordinated plan to overcome the barrage of supernatural calamities.”

The Haitian League is combining an emergency response with a long-term sustainable development solution of lakes excavation, water management and reforestation through our noted and well-respected partners Vakansitil. Two development specialists from Haiti representing THL-Haiti and “Les Petit Freres and Petites Soeurs de L’Incarnation” will be available to the public and the press.

The league has partnered with American Airline and a number of organizations in New York, California, Georgia, Florida, New Hampshire and New York to bring emergency medicines, and food to the victims. In addition to your prayers please send your tax deductible contribution to The Haitian League, 22 Ball Street, Irvington, NJ 07111 or online at https://www.haitianleague.org/OnlineDonation.aspx
