On behalf of the Haitian League, I thank you for visiting us. I hope you have enjoyed the virtual tour of Haiti including its geography, deforested land, beaches, cultural experiences, and Haitian Americans’ quest for integration, social immersion, recognition and assistance to Haiti.
Over the past 50 years, more than 1/3 of Haiti’s population of 10-12 million has emigrated (Diaspora) and causes what many described as a brain drain. The first wave of Haitians left Haiti for Savannah, GA, in 1979 to help the US in its quest for Independence. Unlike the subsequent waves, they returned to The Then prosperous Haiti, and subsequently made of it the first independent black nation in the world.
Today, the sun-soaked beaches, palm trees swaying in the Caribbean breeze and the laid-back lifestyle that once typified the tropical tourist cliché are now just distant memories on Haiti’s shores. In the heart of one of the world's most popular -- and lucrative -- holiday regions, this small nation of slave descendants is again at war with itself, mired in poverty and facing a bleak dawn.
However, the sun, the Caribbean breeze, the people and the deforested lands have not yet disappeared. The polarized Diaspora continues to express interest and is of substantive support to its homeland. Moreover this support, poorly coordinated, has not managed to resuscitate the gravely ill country.
Today, wherever you are, you are invited to join hand and be part of the movement for integration in our adopted lands and the work for a coordinated sustainable solution for Haiti.
Please join the waves in the journey to the next level.
